A Walnut Hill man was killed Saturday at his home at 7141 Circle Road, just south of the Alabama state line, after accidentally shooting himself with his own shotgun, according to officials with the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Department.

According to the incident report, Wendell Thompson, 50, was killed when his shotgun accidentally discharged while he was cleaning the weapon, fatally wounding him in his chest.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency workers from Atmore responded to the scene Saturday at approximately 4:15 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Department officials, but were unable to revive the Thompson.

Officials said the incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, but there is currently no reason to believe foul play was a factor in the death.

Sheriff’s Department officials said more information will be released as it is verified.
