An Atmore woman lost her home in a fire Saturday evening.

Atmore Fire Chief Gerry McGhee said that the house at 4772 U.S. Highway 31, owned by Linda Overstreet, was completely destroyed. There was nobody in the home at the time of the fire, he said.

McGhee said that the Atmore Fire Department was called to the scene at 5:27 p.m. Saturday evening. When firefighters arrived, the home was already burning heavily, he said.

“By the time we got there, it was almost burned to ashes,” he said. “We put out a few hot spots where we could, but otherwise there wasn’t much we could do.”

McGhee said that Overstreet told firefighters she had gone to Bay Minette to visit a family member, and did not believe that she had left on any appliances that might have started the fire.

The Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the fire, McGhee said, providing manpower and a tanker truck.
