The Main Street railroad crossing will be closed Wednesday for track replacement and maintenance, according to city of Atmore officials.

Glenn Carlee, director of public safety for the city of Atmore, said Tuesday morning that CSX is scheduled to close the Main Street railroad crossing early Wednesday morning in hopes of having it completed and re-opened by the end of the day.

Carlee said that traffic will be re-routed to other open railroad crossings, but urged citizens to try and avoid Main Street during high traffic hours. The heaviest traffic is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., he said.

“If people can avoid travelling through Main Street at all, it will help keep the traffic down,” he said. “Motorists will be rerouted to some of the other railroad crossings, which will be open.”

Carlee said that CSX plans to close the Trammell Street railroad crossing Thursday, and hopefully have it completed by Friday. That should complete all of the company’s scheduled work, he said.

Tuesday morning, CSX closed the Presley Street intersection, and was scheduled to have it re-opened again either late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning. The railroad intersection at Dees Drive was also closed Tuesday but expected to be re-opened by this morning.

Carlee said Tuesday that other intersections, including Swift Mill Road and Wilson Avenue, were open for traffic overflow from the planned Main Street closure.

Carlee noted that the CSX schedule is subject to change, and drivers should remain cautious while any work is taking place.
