Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year.

Why can’t it be yours?

For me, the day always comes to mind one that is designated for traditions and a time to relax with family and friends.

Growing up, our family always had a pretty consistent schedule on Christmas Eve.

Usually during the day, my immediate family would hang out and not do much. By the evening, we’d get dressed up and head to church.

Our church in Fairhope offered services at different times during the day and night. There is always an afternoon service, early evening service and mid-to-late evening service.

Everybody went to the early evening service as they wanted to head out to go to any Christmas parties they’d not want to miss.

Usually, we’d attend the later service, which was fine because there’d be no question that we’d get some decent seats.

Once the service was over and we all sang “Silent Night” with candles in hand, we’d leave as a family and head home.

After a nice dinner and wrapping presents at the last minute, we’d sit in front of the TV and catch one of TBS’s marathon sessions of “A Christmas Story” or watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” on NBC before bedtime.

I don’t know why Christmas Eve is my favorite night of the year, to be honest.

Maybe it’s the special time spent with family and friends.

Maybe it’s a night where we as Christians get together one last time during Advent to reflect on what is about to happen. Advent is the first season of the Christian church year that leads up to Christmas. It usually lasts some four-to-five weeks.

When I lay my head down on my pillow on that night, I smile knowing that another great Christmas Eve has passed and soon the cusp of another will be here before I know it.
