Fred Sherman Salter

ATMORE – Mr. Fred Sherman Salter of Atmore passed away at Springhill Hospital in Mobile on July 8, 2010. Born on November 21, 1937 in Burnt Corn, Ala., he was the third of four children of Marvin Andrew and Gussie Idonia Salter. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his older sister, Thelma Salter, and his brother, Reginald Wesley (Bud) Salter.

Mr. Salter moved from Conecuh to Escambia County at a very young age and graduated from W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton in 1955. After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Salter worked at Container Corporation of America for 39 years until his retirement in 1998.

He served on the Escambia County Board of Education for 12 years and was president of the Pollard McCall PTO. He was a member of the Civitans for many years and served on the McCall Water Board. Mr. Salter also served as treasurer of the Atmore American Legion, where he was a long-standing member.

For 47 years, Mr. Salter was a member of Brewton Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as a deacon and as treasurer. A tireless worker for Christ, Mr. Salter helped build churches and church schools during missionary trips to Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Known for his belief in education, Mr. Salter supported his wife through 11 years of medical school and supported his son through the University of Alabama, where he obtained a business degree.

Mr. Salter is survived by Dr. Frances DeLaine Byrd Salter, his wife of 47 years; their son, Fred Sherman Salter, Junior and his wife Theresa of Brewton; and three grandchildren, Ashley Megan Nall, Stephen Andrew Salter, and Jonah Isaiah Pate. Other survivors include two great-grandchildren, Trever Alan Nall and Jordan Elizabeth Salter, and one sister, Mrs. Wylmogene Hart of Brewton.

The Salters will receive family and friends at visitation at Petty Eastside Chapel on Saturday, July 10 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The funeral will be on Sunday, July 11 at 3 p.m. at Brewton Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Byrnes Pitts officiating. Burial will follow in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton.

Pallbearers will be David Chavers, Chuck Chavers, Joey O’Bannon, Jerry Pate, Chris Byrd, Fred Balkcom, Pete Duiano, Ray Lee, Irvin Carnley, Jr., Gerald Franklin, and Lamar Hodge.

Honorary pallbearers will include the American Legion.
