Collision on U.S. 31 results in injuries

At least two people were injured in a two-vehicle accident around 1 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 31 near Wawbeek.

The collision involved a Ford Expedition and a Chevrolet Impala when the two collided just north of Old Atmore Road on U.S. 31. The Expedition left the roadway following impact and at least one occupant of the vehicle was removed by extraction.

The extent of injuries on any of the victims has not been made available at this time, but a spokesperson with the Alabama State Troopers Office said the injuries to both drivers are non-life threatening.

The accident occurred during a heavy downpour as a cold front moved in causing storms most of the day.

Traffic in north and south lanes is at a standstill to allow emergency responders to work the scene and respond to those injured. Those working the scene included deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Wawbeek Volunteer Fire Department, Flomaton Fire Department, the Alabama State Trooper’s Office and Atmore Ambulance.

Identification of those involved in the crash had not been released as of press time.
