An early-morning fire Tuesday has prompted an investigation by the Atmore Fire Department.

Atmore Fire Chief Gerry McGhee said a home on 152 Short Street was completely destroyed by fire during the blaze.

“We received the call at 3:30 a.m,” McGhee said. “Our men were on the scene until about 7 a.m.”

McGhee said the investigation will continue and State Fire Marshal officials are expected in Atmore today, Jan. 26.

“We have the fire marshal coming in on Wednesday to continue the investigation,” McGhee said. “We are investigating the fire since there was no power and no water going to the home.”

McGhee said the home was unoccupied, however, the owner of the home had told fire officials she had moved from the home when she could no longer afford power or water for the residence.

McGhee said the home was a total loss due to changes made following damage to the home from storms in recent years.

“The house had some repairs made after one of the hurricanes through here,” McGhee said. “The roof was replaced with a tin roof which held in some of the fire. It was a total loss.”

McGhee said results from the fire marshal’s office will be reviewed as the department continues their investigation.
