Lady Chiefs go 2-2 in Gulf Shores tourney

In a four-day span, the Northview Lady Chiefs played in five games taking on the West Florida Lady Jaguars on Monday at West Florida High School and also competing in a tournament in Gulf Shores over the weekend.

In that span, the Lady Chiefs fell below .500 winning two of their four games in the tournament and falling to the Lady Jaguars.

Lady Chiefs 2

Northview’s trip to West Florida High School went sour on Monday afternoon as the Chiefs were defeated 3-2 by the hosting Lady Jaguars.

The Lady Chiefs (4-6) played a competitive game with the Lady Jaguars holding a 2-1 lead in the middle of the game.

The Lady Jaguars struck first as K. Kenfield was walked and scored on a single by J. Briggs to give West Florida a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Chiefs went scoreless until the top of the third inning. Northview took the lead 2-1 when Taylor Byrd (0-for-3, R) reached base on an error and Ashley Digmon (2-for-4, 2B, R) made it to second on a double. Both runners scored when Misty Doran (2-for-3, two 2B, 2RBI) ripped a two-run double.

The Lady Chiefs were held scoreless for the rest of the game, but could not hold the Lady Jaguars off of the scoreboard as Kenfield tied the game in the fifth with her second run and Kayla Rosario scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Doran started on the mound for the Lady Chiefs pitching seven innings. She struck out 10 batters and walked six.

The Lady Chiefs next game is Thursday at home against Baker. Games begin at 4 p.m.

Northview’s Lady Chiefs ended the Gulf Shores tournament with a 4-0 shutout loss to the Alma Bryant Lady Hurricanes on Saturday in Gulf Shores.

The Lady Chiefs (4-5) were held off the scoreboard by the Lady Hurrianes who were led on the mound by Jana Stringfellow.

Stringfellow pitched five innings striking out five Lady Chiefs.

Alma Bryant scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning with Erica Davis reaching on a single and making it around the basepath.

With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Lady Hurricanes added two more runs to the scoreboard with Stringfellow reaching base on a single and being knocked in by Davis’ two-run bomb.

Stringfellow put the icining on the cake in the bottom of the fourth with her second run of the game as the Lady Hurricanes picked up the win 4-0.

Lady Chief Emily Vickery was the leading batter for Northview going 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.

Miranda Burkette took the loss for the Lady Chiefs pitching four innings. She gave up four runs and recorded no strikeouts.

After opening the Gulf Shores tournament with two consecutive victories, the Northview Lady Chiefs gave up their first loss falling 7-4 to the Baker (Ala.) Honeybees on Saturday in Gulf Shores.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, the Lady Chiefs took the lead 3-2 after Ashley Digmon (0-for-3, R), Emily Vickery (1-for-2, R) and Misty Doran (1-for-1, HR, 3RBI, R) all scored in the bottom of the first on a three-run dinger by Doran.

After a scoreless second inning, the Honeybees took the lead in the top of the third with a five-run inning with T. Harrison, R. Lyons, J. Poiroux, C. Kulnick and L. Sumerlin all scoring runs.

Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Chiefs were looking for a comeback, but could only muster one run as Lauren McCall was walked and scored on a passed ball by the catcher.

Doran was on the mound for the Lady Chiefs in the 7-4 loss pitching four innings. She gave up seven runs, while striking out two batters.

Lady Tigers 1

Northview added another win in the Gulf Shores tournament on Saturday as they crushed the Baldwin County Lady Tigers 14-1 in Gulf Shores.

Northview (4-3) opened the game with a two-run inning in the top of the first as Emily Vickery (3-for-4, two 2B, 3RBI) and Misty Doran (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) both scored runs.

In the top of the second, the Lady Chiefs scored six runs with the highlight of the inning being a three-run homerun by Shawna Montgomery (3-for-4, HR, 2B, 3RBI).

Already leading 8-0 at the top of the third, the Lady Chiefs added two more runs with Sarah Killam (2-for-3, 2RBI) and Ashley Digmon (2-for-4, RBI) coming across the plate to give Northview a 10-0 lead.

After holding the Lady Tigers scoreless again in the bottom of the third, the Lady Chiefs added four more runs with Montgomery, Miranda Burkette (1-for-3, R), Lauren McCall (2-for-4, R) and Killam all crossing the plate.

Baldwin County finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a runner making it around the basepath, but the damage was too much to overcome as Northview won 14-1.

Northview opened their tournament in Gulf Shores with a dominating 9-2 win over the Thomasville Lady Tigers on Friday.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, the Lady Chiefs (3-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the first with Hayley Simpson (1-for-3, R), Emily Vickery (3-for-3, 4RBI, R), Misty Doran (0-for-3, R) and Shawna Montgomery (1-for-2) all crossing home plate.

The Lady Chiefs extended their lead in the bottom of the third with four more runs as Miranda Burkette (0-for-2, R), Sarah Killam (2-for-3, 2B, R), Shaniqua Jones (1-for-3, R) and Kara Hardin (1-for-3, 2RBI, R) each scoring.

Northview added one final run in the bottom of the fifth as Montgomery scored her second run of the game to give the Lady Chiefs a 9-2 win.
