A few more weeks and Relay for Life will be history until next year. But there’s still time to have a little more fun and collect a little more to help fight cancer.

Atmore’s Relay for Life will culminate on April 30, 2011, when teams will join together at Tom Byrne Park to raise money, honor some survivors and have a little bit of fun, and also help the fight for a cancer cure.

According to the 2011 Atmore Relay for Life newsletter, cancer kills one American every minute of every day, or about 1,500 people every 24 hours.  One of every two men and one out of three women will get cancer in their lifetime. In the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death, responsible for one in four deaths.

Relay For Life needs the help and support of the community to do what they can to further the possibility of a cure. Sponsors are asked to submit their pledges by April 1.

There are still some exciting things planned before April 30. Atmore Family Medicine’s Relay for Life team is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk Race on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 8 a.m. The race will start at Atmore Family Medicine. Race packets can be picked up from 7:15-7:30 a.m. the day of the race. Fees are $15 if you pre register, $10 for students and $20 the day of the race. To pre register, contact any team member at 368-7974 or go by the office at 402 Medical Park Drive.

Julie Ray, the chairperson for this year’s Relay, said that things are coming along pretty well.

“We need the sponsorships to contact us by April 1,” Ray said. “We have also said that we need the luminarias to be bought by then. But they will be available up to and through the day of Relay on April 30.”

The Luminaria Ceremony is a a time of remembrance and hope. It signifies the a time to grieve for those who have been lost to cancer, to think of those who have gone through the experience of cancer and to hope for a future free of cancer. The Luminaria Bags are $5 each and the torches sell for $100 each. The bags will be place around the track just prior to the ceremony of lighting the torches to begin the day’s activities. The Ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. on the night of the Relay and torches and luminaria bags can be purchased until 6 p.m.

The Relay Committee will host a fashion show on Relay night on Saturday, April 30, featuring outfits designed by teams that relate to their theme. Winners will be selected based on audience participation. Participates can get their imagination and talents and put them together with tape and scissors to make a fashion statement.

Other events will be announced as soon as the information becomes available.
