Mayfest Saturday at Tom Byrne Park

Everyone in Atmore and the surrounding area are excited about the upcoming Mayfest, which will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday at Tom Byrne Park, located on Lindberg Avenue.

Mayfest is sponsored by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company, Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union, Frontier Communications and the corporate partner, Wind Creek Casino and Hotel, along with the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We will have something for everyone,” Sheryl Vickery, executive director of the Chamber, said. “We will have several talented groups and individuals who will perform all throughout the day including the rock singer/songwriter, Shane Harrell and the Major Moves Band.”

Vickery said that the kids will have plenty to do with all the events that are planned for the day. The Mayfest T-shirts have come in and they are for sale at any Chamber member office. They are $12 for adult small through X-large and $14 for 2X through 3X.

Two features of the day will be the Beautiful Baby Contest and the Pooch Parade.

Children aged three months through three years, can participate for prizes and a Beautiful Baby shirt in a contest sponsored by The Atmore Advance. Pre-registration is $15 at the Chamber of Commerce and Jus 4 Kids. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Tom Byrne Park and the fee will be $20.

The Pooch Parade will be a feature of the day for the second year. Dogs and their owners will get a chance to parade around to compete in a costume contest and to recognize “Miss Prissy Pup” and “Mister Manly Mutt.” This event is sponsored by Atmore Animal Hospital, Lee Veterinary Clinc, P.C., K-9 Kleaners and the Atmore Chamber office. Registration will be from 8:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. at the park and the fee will be $10. Only friendly dogs will be allowed in the contest and aggressive dogs will not be allowed. All Dogs have to be four months or older; all dog handlers have to be 18 or supervised by an adult; dogs need to have had their vaccinations and owner should be able to prove it; and dogs have to be on a leash at all times.

“We have a good number of arts and crafts booths that will be set up in the park,” said Vickery. “With this being Mother’s Day weekend, there will be plenty of items for sale that will make good Mother’s Day presents. This day at the park would be a good gift for the moms.”
