The Escambia Spartans semi-pro football team improved their record to 2-1 Saturday at home as they came away with a 60-0 romp of the Louisiana Power in Century, Fla.
With the win, the Spartans are tied for third in their division.
This Saturday, the Spartans will play the Prichard Falcons (4-0) at Blount High School in Prichard. The Spartans beat the Falcons in the preseason jamboree, however since then the Falcons have been undefeated in the regular season and are ranked No. 2 in the league and in the National Semi-pro BCS standings.
The Escambia Spartans were ranked 17th in the BCS standings before Saturday’s game and the current standings haven’t been posted after the win, but the team is most likely to move into the top ten.
“We had a great turnout at the game last night and hope to continue to receive support from our community and fans,” Spartan coach Raj Parmar said of the first home game this season for the Spartans. The game was sponsored by Aaron’s of Brewton and furthermore, we would also like to thank everyone who has donated and contributed to our team. We are still in need of sponsorship and hope we start getting local support from other businesses.”
Parmar said the mayor of Century, Freddie W. McCall Sr., was the honorary coin toss person for the game last night.
“The Escambia Spartans would personally like to thank Mayor McCall for his generosity and support for our team and his help with getting Kato Stanton Stadium at Carver Middle School in Century to be our home field,” Parmar said. “It is sad when a team is based out of Brewton, but they have to go out of town/state to play a home game.”
