Virgil Peacock dies at 80

Atmore native Virgil N. Peacock passed away Tuesday at age 80 in a healthcare facility in Spanish Fort.

Peacock, a retired Navy lieutenant commander and a bank officer with First National Bank of Mobile, AmSouth Bank, First Southern Savings and Loan and Altus Bank, was born in Atmore on Oct. 23, 1930 and later came to be known as one of the ‘Barnes boys’ while playing football at Escambia County High School.

According to his obituary Peacock was “a hard worker who said he never had a job he didn’t like.”

Peacock is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nell; three sons, Bryan (Terri), Brad (Lisa) and Greg (Andrea); grandchildren Kelly, Lindsey, Lauren, Will, Bryndon, Bailey and Bryce; sisters Ruth Taylor and Joyce Fuller.

A graveside service will be held at Jubilee Memorial Gardens at 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
