In a brief statement made yesterday in Montgomery, Gov. Robert Bentley said he has no plans to intervene in the execution of 37-year-old inmate Derrick Mason, who is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection at Holman Prison tonight at 6 p.m.

Mason was convicted of the March 24, 1994 shooting death of 25-year-old convenience store clerk Angela Cagle in Huntsville.

According to published reports Mason officially apologized to the Cagle family years ago and has written letters to officials, including Gov. Bentley, claiming to have turned his life around while in prison.
