The American Cancer Society’s 2012 Relay For Life event is already in preparation in Atmore.

With almost seven months until the big night, chairperson Gayle Johnson said it is never too early to get started.

‘Relay’ will get under way next year on Friday, Apr. 27 at 6 p.m. at Tom Byrne Park and will run through the night. Participants will reach the finish line Saturday, Apr. 28 at 6 a.m.

Johnson, who co-chaired last year’s event, said ‘Relay’ exceeded the 2011 goal, something she hopes will be repeated in 2012.

“We had a goal of $43,000 last year,” Johnson said. “We raised something like $64,000.”

The goal for 2012 has been set at $55,000.

Johnson said next year’s theme will be “The Wonderful World of Relay, Feel the Magic, Find the Cure.” Johnson said each team’s campsite will be decorated in a different Disney theme.

Although ‘Relay’ 2012 is still months away, Johnson said any and all support for next year’s event is greatly appreciated.

“Between now and then we’ll be recruiting teams, doing fundraisers and contacting sponsors,” she said. “I want to encourage people to participate and support our teams.”
