The “best barbeque sandwich” is back this Friday and Saturday when the parishioners at St. Roberts of Bellarmine hold the church’s annual barbeque and bazaar.

The St. Robert’s Annual BBQ and Bazaar, which is being promoted as very famous, has been held since 1947 and features two days of barbeque plates and a sale of different items from food to gift items.

The event began as a fundraiser to help the raise a building, Father Gordon Milstid said.

“It’s really a tradition to hold our barbeque and bazaar,” he said. “It started out as a building fundraiser in 1947, but now its just an annual event for us each year.”

Along with being a tradition, the event is still somewhat used as a fundraiser although not strictly for the church.

A large portion of the funds raised through the barbeque and bazaar go back to the community, Milstid said.

“We don’t hold it for the financial aspect, but it does do well financially,” he said. “For our church, it is more about bringing together a good community spirit. The funds we do raise, we try to put back into different charities or organizations in the community.”

The barbeque and bazaar will begin on Friday at 8 a.m. with the lunch menu including barbeque sandwiches as well as baked goods, a cake walk, handcrafted gift items and a silent auction featuring a huge array of gift baskets.

On Saturday, the event will continue beginning at 8 a.m. with a lunch plate offered featuring chopped barbeque Boston Butt, baked beans, coleslaw, bread, pound cake and a drink.

A prize give away will also be held with seven winners receiving a total of $500. The top prize winner will receive $300, while the second prize will be $100. Five winners will receive $20 each. To be a part of the prize give away, a $1 donation may be made or receive six chances for $5.
