This is the second award of its nature given in the state of Alabama. The Escambia County Alabama Drug Court was chosen for the honor out of 63 drug courts in the state.

Escambia’s drug court also received a grant to train other drug courts within the State of Alabama.

Drug Court Director Denise Carlee said officials in Escambia County are eager to reach out to other counties in the state who are trying to establish or improve their courts.

“We realized that so many drug courts needed assistance in getting their programs up and running so that they could have a successful drug court,” Carlee said. “We wanted to reach out and help those drug courts.

Carlee said some training has already been held in Brewton and has gone well.

“At this time we have trained 14 other counties in the State, with all of those persons coming into Brewton, Alabama for the training,” she said.

The Escambia County Drug Court has been in operation since October of 2002.
