Tailgating for a cause

Alabama and Auburn fans enjoyed a tailgate party while helping collect canned food for Atmore Area Christian Care Ministries Thursday night at United Bank.

The parking lot at United Bank could have easily been mistaken for one in Tuscaloosa or Auburn Thursday night as a crowd descended for a pre-Iron Bowl tailgate party.

As Alabama and Auburn clad fans enjoyed family fun and food from local restaurants, footage from past football games flashed on a big screen, adding to the hype of the Nov. 26 showdown.

But Thursday’s event was not all about a good time. Those in attendance were also helping a local food bank store up much needed non-perishable items for the holidays.

United Bank employees stayed busy all week, working to support good causes in the community while giving Alabama and Auburn football fans a chance for some last minute good-natured barbs before the big game.

Wednesday United Bank hosted an Iron Bowl themed blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

United Bank human resource officer Anne Hetzel said the turnout from the community was great and enabled the blood drive to meet its goal.

“We had a great, successful drive and we appreciate everyone coming together for a great cause,” Hetzel said.

For every blood donation given Wednesday, or for a contribution of 10 canned food items, United Bank gave out entries for prizes, including a 46-inch flat screen TV.

All blood donations will benefit the local Red Cross effort, while all food donations will benefit Atmore Area Christian Care Ministries.
