The Youth Leadership Atmore Class took part in their history session on Wednesday with a hayride.

Members of this year’s Youth Leadership Atmore class received a history lesson on Wednesday morning as they were treated to a hayride and were informed of the history that surrounds Atmore and Poarch.

Juniors from area schools make up the class that participated in the historical session of the program held by the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce.

The YLA students began the day at Trinity Episcopal Church where they heard from Adaline Carney about the history of the church and William Marshall Carney. A hayride followed with more information from Cornelia Elmore at the Boy Scout Hut and Olive Watson at Watson Cabin in Heritage Park.

The session went smooth with the characters giving something special to the class, Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Sheryl Vickery said.

“It went wonderful,” she said. “They are learning something interesting. Bringing the characters out to speak to them gives them an insight on what it was like to live back then. It allows them to relate to them on some level.”
