An open investigation into an employee at Escambia County Middle School is beginning to garner attention in the community, but so far only the investigation itself has been confirmed by local authorities.

“I can only confirm that we do have an open investigation into an employee at the middle school,” Atmore Police Chief Jason Dean said.

Dean said he could not confirm the identity of the employee or even the nature of the investigation.

Escambia County School Board Interim Superintendent Randall Little said the board is aware of the investigation but cannot divulge any details due to the confidentiality aspect of the process.

“I am aware of it,” Little said. “We are cooperating fully. It’s just one of these things where we cannot comment because we have to follow the letter of the law.”

ECMS Principal Linda Shuford could not be reached for comment Friday.
