Atmore fire fighters work to extinguish a home demolished Thursday morning by a controlled burn.

Atmore fire fighters were hard at work Thursday morning carrying out the Atmore City Council’s plan to demolish two condemned homes on Broad Street.

Atmore Fire Department used “controlled burns” to rid the street of dilapidated homes at 163 and 171 Broad Street according to Atmore Fire Chief Gerry McGhee.

McGhee said using controlled burns is a much faster and more efficient method of demolishing structures than tearing them down with equipment. McGhee said burning condemned structures also cuts down on the amount of waste piling up in local landfills.
