It is once again time for the launching of Atmore’s annual United Fund drive and this year’s campaign kick off will begin with some of Atmore’s more recognizable faces in a precarious location – behind bars.

United Fund President Lee Ann Allen said the kickoff event is only days away and should be as successful as it has been in the past.

“We are officially kicking off on (Thursday), Oct. 18 with a lock up at city hall,” Allen said. “Our goal is $60,000 again this year.”

The lock up event was also the kick off for last year’s drive, leading to a strong opening to the fund raising year with $28, 300 brought in to get things started.

Allen said she is hoping for another strong start, but added events will be held throughout the campaign.

“We hope to raise a good portion at the kick off,” Allen said. “We will be doing a Business After Hours in November to keep the awareness there.”

The United Fund lock up event will feature local business, school and city leaders who will be picked up by Atmore police officers and transported to Atmore City Hall, where they will be held until their “bail” is posted by local donations.

All proceeds from this year’s United Fund drive will go to benefit local organizations, including: Goodwill Easter Seals, American Red Cross, GECA, Save a Life, Atmore Area Christian Care, Progressive Civic and Recreation Club, Council on Aging, HIPPY, Atmore Coop. Library, Atmore Public Library, Atmore Youth Football, girls softball and Concerned Citizens of Atmore.
