An Atmore man has been sentenced to two decades in state prison in Florida after being convicted of the Dec. 6, 2011 attack of a man in Century.
Willie James Floyd, 56, was convicted of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon last month after a jury determined he had indeed shot 30-year-old Deririck Medlock as he attempted to cross an intersection in December.
Floyd was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the minimum mandatory term for the third degree felony.
Floyd is currently housed in the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola, Fla. awaiting transfer to a state-run prison.
Floyd’s conviction stemmed from the December incident, in which he was convicted of approaching Medlock and brandishing a shotgun.
Medlock attempted to flee across Century Boulevard, at which time Floyd fired the weapon, striking Medlock in the leg with birdshot.
