Atmore police officers apprehended what they believed to be an unarmed robber Friday night on Liberty Street, only to discover the suspect was in possession of crack cocaine while fitting him for his jailhouse apparel.
Derrell Deon Williams, 23, of Atmore, was taken into custody by Atmore police officers Jonathan Kelley and Shaun Golden around 9:45 p.m. after the suspect allegedly attempted to steal items from his grandmother’s home on Liberty Street.
According to 21st Judicial Drug Task Force Agent Scott Walden, the victim called law enforcement agents to notify them of the alleged burglary. Once on the scene, Walden said Williams was uncooperative and “continued to argue with agents.”
Williams was arrested and charged with failure to obey an officer and trespassing.
While being booked into the Atmore jail, officer Golden said he found two prescription bottles containing substances consistent with crack cocaine hidden in the area of Williams’ undergarments.
Walden said the suspect, already on probation for robbery charges, could face as many as 15 years in prison if convicted.
