Escambia Academy senior Brandy Helton placed in the top 10 of the Alabama’s Homecoming Queen competition.
The Atmore resident placed in the top 10 out of 24 high school homecoming queens from around the state at the competition held April 21 at The University of Alabama.
“I felt relieved and really excited,” Helton said of her finish. “Out of the whole state, I wasn’t expecting a small town like this one to do so well.”
The contestants were interviewed before the pageant and also judged on poise, appearance and top 10 finishers were asked an on-stage question.
Helton was elected EA’s Homecoming Queen last year, which was a surprise to her since she transferred to the school the year before.
“I wasn’t expecting to get it since I hadn’t been here that long,” she said.
The daughter of Brenda and Michael Helton said she plans to attend Jefferson Davis Community College before transferring to The University of South Alabama to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner.
The 18-year-old graduates from EA with the rest of her classmates on May 23.
