Atmore Dragway is off to a blazing start.

Since opening on May 18, owner Gary Moore said the refurbished track has been packed full of patrons.

“It’s wide open,” he said. “The crowds are incredible. We’ve had a packed house every night since we opened the gates.”

Moore credits the “outstanding facility” and the work that was done to renovate the old track near Wind Creek Casino and Hotel.

The track hasn’t only been popular with spectators, but with racers as well, Moore said. The first and only bracket races the track has held on May 25 saw around 124 cars compete.

Most Saturdays the track gates open at 2 p.m. for the more structured bracket races in three categories including super pro, no box and street E/T. Gates open at 4 p.m. Sunday for test and tune/ grudge racing.

Moore said the track may open at 3 p.m. on June 15 when the jet truck Shockwave visits. The Peterbuilt truck with three jet engines on the back can reach speeds of up to 367 miles per hour.
