Atmore City Council approves upcoming, city-wide events

The Atmore City Council approved several upcoming events at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Council members approved this year’s Walk-A-Thon, organized by the Atmore Women of Distinction. The walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Atmore YMCA and will continue to Tom Byrne Park. All funds will go to benefit gas cards for cancer patients.

The council also approved Saturday, Aug. 17 as this year’s date for the Unity Day event, sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Atmore. The event will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Houston Avery Park.

In other business the council:

• Approved a second reading of ordinance 10-2013, allowing for the annexation of the second half of the city landfill.

• Approved a second reading of ordinance 11-2013, allowing for the approval of redistricting Atmore’s five voting districts to bring them into compliance with federal and state laws following the most recent census.

• Approved a second reading of ordinance 12-2013, allowing for the approval of amendments to the city’s leash law, which would make it a requirement for dogs to be on a leash in a public place and would restrict residents from owning more than three adult dogs.

• Approved a tent revival request from Upper Room Holiness Church.

• Approved the transfer of a deed for property adjacent to Masland Carpets from the Industrial Development Board to the City of Atmore.

• Approved the planting for trees for aesthetic purposes along property adjacent to Atmore Municipal Airport.

• Approved the disassembly of wooden playground equipment at Tom Byrne Park and Houston Avery Park to be replaced with metal or plastic, more-durable equipment.

• Acknowledged the certification of Councilmen Cornell Torrence and Chris Walker as municipal officers.
