Players will soon be able to sign up for a newly announced flag football league in Atmore.

Registration for the no-tackle league that will play under rules from the United States Flag Football Association will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 in the auditorium of Atmore City Hall, said Atmore Pee Wee Football League President Murray Johnson.

The league will be chartered with the American Youth Football Association for the purpose of purchasing group accident and liability coverage.

There is no fee to register and children ages 5 to 12 can register to play in the new league. The only possible expense passed on to parents will be a team T-shirt, which will cost between $8 and $10.

“At a later date, ages above that could possibly form teams,” Johnson said.

The 7-on-7 permits 10 players on each team, which would allow for starters and three subs for each team. Teams would play games at baseball parks around the city, Johnson said. Games would be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Games would last about an hour.

He said the idea for the flag football league has already received lots of positive feedback.

“I’ve had several calls,” Johnson said.

He said he’s currently looking for volunteers to coach teams, but the number of teams and when games might begin depend on the numbers of players who register. For more information, call Johnson at (251) 294-1128, or Jerome Webster at (251) 294-2352.
