NWE football plays preseason jamboree

The Northwest Escambia Eagles’ youth football teams went 5-2 Saturday in preseason jamborees.

The 7-and-8-year-old sophomore team beat W.S. Neal, 16-0. Kaden Odom scored two touchdowns for the Eagles and Nolin Godwin scored the two-point conversions.

The 9-and-10-year-old junior team beat Poarch, 16-0. The Eagles’ defense allowed no positive yardage in the win. Jayden Jackson and Jaheem Durant scored touchdowns for the Eagles. Jackson and Durant each added a two-point conversion.

The juniors also defeated Baker, 16-0. Jackson stripped the ball from a Baker player and returned it for a touchdown. Jaden Cunningham completed a pass to Dariontae Richardson for the two-point conversion. Quarterback Michael Merchant carried the ball for a conversion on another touchdown scored by Durant.

The freshman team, which consisted of players ages 4, 5 and 6, lost 13-7 to Poarch, but rebounded to beat Baker 27-0 in a second game.

Kaden Dove, Zyonne Wesley, Liam Hatcher and Jackson Simmons all scored. The team ran for 170 yards and Wesley returned a fumble for a touchdown.

The 11-and-12-year-old seniors lost 7-0 to Neal. Trent Kite had a touchdown called back in the game.

The seniors bounced back to beat Baker, 22-0. Kite scored a touchdown and Seth Killam scored twice. Killam also was two-for-three on extra points.

The Eagles will travel to Baker, Fla., on Saturday for games, starting at 2 p.m.
