Classic cars cruise through town

Atmore residents might have experienced a “blast from the past” if they drove by the downtown railroad crossing Wednesday afternoon.
Three vintage Ford Model A vehicles were stopped by the railroad tracks off Nashville Avenue for a while, because one of the classic cars had broken down. The drivers were members of the Central Alabama Model “A” Ford Club, and were on their way from Oxford, Ala., to Mobile to participate in the seventh annual Sweet Home Alabama Tour.
The Sweet Home Alabama Tour is an annual event where classic car drivers bring their vehicles to Mobile to view some of the local sights, including Bellingrath Gardens and the U.S.S. Alabama.
The Model A was originally manufactured from 1927 through 1931, and was Ford’s successor to the famous Model T.
Cecil Freeman, of Oxford, said that his group had 10 participants, and that seven of the drivers continued to Mobile while two other vehicles stayed behind to make sure the broken-down car could be fixed.
Freeman said that there would be a total of 57 classic vehicles in Mobile for the Sweet Home Alabama Tour, including car owners from Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina, among other states.
The club members were eventually able to fix the car trouble, and continued on their way to Mobile.
