Workers with T-Roy’s Relief Roofing start replacing a portion of the YMCA on Thursday morning. The project began Thursday and is expected to take about 10 days.

The Atmore Area YMCA is getting a much-needed upgrade this month.

CEO Paul Chason said that the facility’s roof is currently in the process of being replaced. Work started Thursday, Oct. 17, and expected to continue for 10 days. He said the roof is in disrepair and is “very aged.”

“We will take actions to minimize any impacts to our patrons,” he said. “However, some parking changes may be required to ensure patron safety. Please be patient with us.”

Chason said that the project required many months of behind-the-scenes work and preparation, before T-Roy’s Relief Roofing of Spanish Fort’s contractor bid was selected.

“Roof replacement is near the end of a long list of repairs and upgrades that have taken place over the last three years,” Chason said. “Many of you have witnessed installation of new windows, upgraded flooring in our workout areas, fresh paint in many areas, and the select replacement of rotted wood throughout the structure.”

Chason said the improvements would not have been possible without the contributions of many local businesses and charitable individuals.

“Atmore area businesses and countless individuals stepped forward and contributed $90,000 to fund these very necessary repairs,” he said. “The Poarch Creek Indians are commended for leading the way. Through the establishment of a matching funds pool and via direct contributions, the PCI contributed a total of $375,000 so the Atmore area can continue to enjoy a much-improved YMCA.

“Thank all of you for your sustained support. Without it, these upgrades would not have been possible.”
