Atmore Nursing Center celebrated Veterans Day on Thursday by honoring resident veterans.

The center’s seven veterans received a certificate and a pin. In addition, they were saluted by Covenant Hospice’s veteran ambassador, Ron Weinmann.

“A salute is the highest honor we can give them,” Weinmann said. “It’s because of them that we’re here.”

The seven residents honored Thursday were Donnie Mimms, Prince Moore, Edwin Ray, Robert Bartley, Lee Bullard, McClain Lee and Robert Cawthon. Bruce Anderson was also honored, but was not present at the center during the ceremony.

“We’re so proud to have the veterans we have here today,” said Administrator Cindy Lee. “We appreciate all you’ve done and the hardships you’ve endured and the hardships your families have endured.”

In addition to honoring the residents, the ceremony featured patriotic music, including Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and Toby Keith’s “American Soldier.” Cookies and punch were also served.

Jodie Williams, Covenant Hospice’s volunteer coordinator, said this marked the third year that they have sponsored the program. She said Covenant Hospice not only holds programs at several facilities in the county, but honors homebound patient veterans as well.

“The families of home patients are blown away by this,” she said.
