A single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning claimed the life of a Bay Minette man.

Shawn Whatley, 34, was killed when the 2006 Nisssan Sentra in which he was riding left the roadway and struck a tree at approximately 12:50 a.m. on U.S. Highway 31, six miles south of Bay Minette, according to a statement from the Alabama State Troopers.

Whatley was not wearing a seatbelt.

Bridgett Whatley of Perdido, the 27-year-old driver of the Sentra, was injured in the crash and transported to USA Medical Center.

The crash is still under investigation.
