The Escambia County Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution at Thursday’s board meeting to name the Escambia County High School gymnasium in honor of Cornell “Coach” Torrence.

Torrence, an Atmore City Council member, taught and coached basketball and football at Escambia County Training School for 14 years and ECHS for 25 years.

Although Torrence was unable to attend Thursday’s meeting, his grandson the Rev. Sinclair Forbes expressed the family’s appreciation to the board for the honor.
