The third-ranked Escambia Academy Cougars improved to 8-0 for the regular season, as they shut out Glenwood on the road Friday night, by the score of 41-0.
EA quarterback Brett Gorum finished with three touchdowns for EA, which led 34-0 at halftime.
Tim Finklea finished with 88 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, and J.P. Sawyer ran for 73 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Ten different players had at least one carry for the Cougars.
EA held Glenwood to just 60 total yards of offense.
Four potential EA touchdowns were wiped out by penalties, but it didn’t matter as the Cougars’ offense kept keeping on the pressure throughout the game.
Gordon Brooks opened the scoring with 10:02 left in the first quarter, when he scored on a 30-yard run. Gorum added the extra point to put EA ahead, 7-0.
Gorum scored on a 2-yard run with 6:15 left in the first quarter, but the extra point was no good.
EA added three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Gorum scored on a 4-yard run with 7:55 remaining, but the extra point failed. Finklea had an 11-yard run with 1:47 remaining, and Gorum passed to Brantley for a two-point conversion, putting EA ahead 27-0 at that point.
Gorum also scored on a 3-yard run with 30 seconds left in the first half, and added the extra point.
EA’s final touchdown of the game came in the third quarter, when Sawyer scored on a 45-yard touchdown run with 6:05 left. Gorum added the extra point.
The Cougars’ win sets up a battle of undefeated teams in EA’s final regular season game. EA will host No. 2-ranked Bessemer Academy on Friday night in Canoe at 7 p.m.
The Rebels come into Friday night’s game with a 9-0 record, including three shutouts. They defeated Glenwood 64-0 on Friday, Oct. 17.
