The city of Atmore will apply for state matching funds for an airport improvement project at the Atmore Municipal Airport.

During Monday’s meeting of the Atmore City Council, Mayor Jim Staff said this is similar to a grant that the city received two years ago. The city did not apply last year, but was given the opportunity to apply this year.

If awarded the grant, the Alabama Dept. of Transportation will provide partial funding for the project.

According to City Resolution No. 2014-16, the city has already approved its share of matching funds and placed it in the airport’s budget for this year.

City officials said the grant is for $2.045 million and the city’s match would be $102,250. It would primarily be used to make improvements at the airport’s runways.

In other business, the city:

• Re-appointed Leigh Ann Rowland to serve another term on the Library Board.

• Joined with the state of Alabama, in declaring Saturday, Nov. 29, as “Small Business Saturday.” According to the city’s resolution, Small Business Saturday was first observed in 2010, as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday to encourage holiday shoppers to patronize small, local brick-and-mortar businesses.

• Heard from a concerned citizen of Atmore, who voiced her concern that loud music was causing a disturbance in the Ashley Street area.

“There are a lot of people in that part of town who are elderly,” said the citizen, who asked not to be identified. “If there’s anything that you can do to patrol it more, that would be great.”

• Heard from business owner Mary Frye, who said that she just wanted to re-open the “Assembly Place” as an establishment where people can pay a rental fee to hold parties or similar events. She said that the renters would be responsible for security and other requirements.

Frye was informed that she would have to re-apply for her business license, with that specific request.
