Handy Lamar Salter

Mr. Handy Lamar Salter, 58, of Atmore (Freemanville Community) transitioned to his heavenly home on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola.

He was a native of Atmore and had lived in Orlando, Fla., before relocating back to Atmore. He was a 1974 graduate of Mid-Florida Technical High School in Orlando. He was a block mason until his health failed.

In his leisure he enjoyed watching Western movies, reading, horseback riding, and being a comedian. Handy was a member of Mt. Gillead Baptist Church and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Orlando.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Salter Jr.; his second father, Clinton Salter Sr.; his grandmother, Earkie Mae Salter-Horace; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Those left to cherish his life and memories are two daughters, Shonté and Janay Baltes, both of Tuscaloosa; his mother, Lillie Bernice Salter of Atmore;  two sisters, Patricia (Maxford) Salter-Jamieson of Birmingham and Angelia Salter-Scott of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Charles (LaTrenda) Salter of Mobile and Vincent (Dana) Salter of Denver, Colo., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Gillead Baptist Church-Freemanville Community with the Rev. Tiffany Salter-Brown, eulogist, and the Rev. Robert D. Davis, host pastor. Inhumation was in Pierce-Rabb Cemetery with Turner Funeral Chapel, LLC, directing.
