Atmore man robs, shoots resident

An Atmore man has been charged with attempted murder after robbing another individual inside of an Antioch Road residence.

Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Brandon Burkett said Joe. L. Craft has been charged with criminal mischief I, robbery I and attempted murder following the incident that took place last Wednesday.

“Jatral James went to his child in common’s mother’s house to give her money in regards to the child. Once there, an altercation took place between James and Craft, in which, Craft then pulled a rifle on James and robbed him from the large amount of currency,” Burkett said. “After James was robbed, Craft opened fire on the rifle and attempted to shoot James until he hid behind his mother out in the yard. He used her as a shield.

“Craft stopped shooting and James was said to have left the scene,” he said.

Burkett said in the process of the shots being fired at James, there were numerous shots being fired at James’ vehicle, which was parked the 191 Antioch Road residence.

Craft was arrested on Thursday evening after a search warrant was issued for evidence at his residence, and was released from the Escambia County Detention Center on Friday on a $100,000 bond.
