Escambia Academy is facing a much-improved Morgan Academy this week for homecoming.

The Cougars are coming off a 41-12 loss to rival Monroe Academy as they begin an important two-game stretch that’ll impact the playoffs.

EA head football coach Hugh Fountain said he thinks the Cougars have to win one of the next two games to get in the postseason.

“We’re sitting in a decent position,” Fountain said. “We would have to win one of the next two to get in the playoffs. That’s the way I think of it.”

If the Cougars win this week and next week against Pike Liberal Arts, then they’ll claim the No. 2 seed.

Morgan Academy is sitting at 3-3 overall, and 2-1 in AISA Class 3A, Region 1. The Cougars are 4-3, and 2-2 in the region.

The Senators came away with a 42-34 win over Autauga Academy last week. AA beat EA 28-18 in week one.

“They’re a spread team even though they do get in the power formation some, like Monroe Academy did,” Fountain said about the Senators. “The quarterback has been playing for them for a long time. He’s a good player.

“I’m also impressed with No. 2 (Jackson Henderson) — he’s pretty quick and fast,” he said.

Fountain said the Senators run to the ball on defense.

“They’re a very scrappy team,” he said.

Homecoming is always an important time for Escambia Academy.

Fountain said his coaches always remind the football team that homecoming is about the game at 7 p.m. on Friday.

“We need to be able to show up and perform in the homecoming game,” he said. “We haven’t had a problem with that in the past because homecoming is important here.”
