Two houses caught fire within a 24-hour period in Atmore, according to fire officials.
The first fire took place Monday morning at 209 Liberty Street, Atmore Fire Chief Ronald Peebles said.
Peebles said the fire department was called out at 8:10 a.m.
“There were flames coming out of the whole front of the house,” Peebles said. “The fire burned up one room, but it was deemed a moderate to total loss.”
Peebles said Joe Johns was renting the house that was owned by James Freeman.
As to the cause, Peebles said the fire allegedly started from a power strip running a computer.
Along with three engines from the AFD, Poarch responded for mutual aid, and Station 15 out of Florida covered the local station’s shift during the fire. Additionally, Atmore Ambulance was on scene as well.
The second fire took place early Tuesday morning at 305 Presley Street, Peebles said.
“The cause is undetermined,” he said. “We’re calling the fire marshal to have a second look at it.”
Peebles said he is bringing in the fire marshal to get a second opinion on the cause of the fire.
“We had two calls on it,” he said. “The first call came out (Tuesday) at 1:50 a.m. We cleared the scene at 3:50 a.m., was called back at 5:28 a.m. and cleared the scene at 8 a.m. for a rekindle.”
Peebles said the Presley Street residence was a total loss as a result of the fire.
