Good weather, crowds highlight Mayfest

Mayfest organizers said the annual festival went well on Saturday at Tom Byrne Park.

Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Vickery said the weather was wonderful and the event took care of itself.

“It went real well,” Vickery said. “It looked like a great crowd.”

Vickery said she thinks more than 3,500 attended the festival.

“Some say the crowd was a little smaller, and some said it was a little larger,” she said. “I think all of the vendors were happy.”

Vickery said the people who were in charge of the children’s activities said it went well.

Compared to last year, Vickery said the event seems to draw larger and larger crowds.

Vickery said a lot of the 72 vendors at the event were from the area, which helps people spend money here in Atmore.

“It has to bring money to the city,” she said. “They’re going to find a way to get the money there.”

To start off Mayfest, a 5K race was held to help raise funds for the Ignite Student Ministry of Grace Fellowship Church.

Race Coordinatory Jonathan McMath said the race went phenomenal.

“We had a great turnout,” McMath said. “We ended up having 140 runners, which ended up breaking the record last year as the largest race in the community.”

McMath said the race helped raise approximately $4,800 for the ministry.

Because it was such a success, McMath said he was tapped to head up the 5K race for Williams Station Day this year.

Jackson Bonner was the overall male winner, running the race in 20 minutes, 5 seconds. Elia Morales was the overall female winner, running the race in 21:56.
