Charlotte “McGhee” Meckel received 60 percent of the vote to beat incumbent David Gehman for the Tribal Council’s secretary seat in a special run off election of the Poarch Creek Indians last Saturday.

“Charlotte Meckel will be sworn in on Aug. 18 to begin her three-year term,” PCI Election Board Chair Edie Jackson said.

Meckel won 852-563 in the election, which had one of the highest turnouts.

Other than the run off for the secretary’s seat, 989 members of the Tribe voted in favor on the constitutional amendment to ratify the roll.

The election for the amendment required 834 votes. The turn out for the amendment was 1,309 votes.

“As a sovereign nation, the Tribe has its own constitution, which outlines its membership eligibility,” Jackson said.
