Alton “Hawkeye” Godwin Jr.

Mr. Alton “Hawkeye” Godwin Jr., 61, passed away on Sat., December 24, 2016, in Mobile.

Mr. Godwin was a native of Pensacola, Fla., and has resided in Poarch for the past 16 years. Hawkeye loved family and friends and was of the Holiness Faith. He is preceded in death by his father, Alton Edward Godwin Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Irene Godwin of Atmore; wife, Bell Godwin of Poarch; two sons, Joseph (Kathy) McGugin of Grand Bay, and Chad (Latasha) Godwin of Poarch; one daughter, Chastity (Bunk) Peebles of Poarch; one brother, Thomas Phillip (Cynthia) Godwin of Mobile; four sisters, Glenda (Byron) Arrington of Milton, Fla., Elizabeth Monachello of Atmore, Katherine (Larry) McDuffie of Atmore and Jackie (Joe) Andrews of Crestview, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Wed., Dec. 28, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Ward and Bro. Walter Rolin officiating.

Burial will follow at the Judson Creek Indian Cemetery.

Visitation was from Dec. 27 at 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. today at the Friendly Holiness Church.

Pallbearers will be Adam Hadley, Eric McDuffie, Shawn Rolin, Kevin Andrews, Brian Couch and Jason Griffey.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Johnny McGhee, Ernest Rolin, Odell McGhee, Mike Bethea and Tinker Rolin.

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes LLC of Atmore is in charge of all arrangements.

 

Shirley Qualls

Mrs. Shirley Qualls, 68, passed away on Sat., Dec. 17, 2016, in Pensacola, Fla.

Mrs. Qualls was a native of Rock Creek, former resident of Pace, Fla. and has resided in Jay for the past six months.

She was an employee of David’s Catfish in Atmore, and was a member of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Shorty and Mable Lucas, and sister, Delores Palmer.

She is survived by her boyfriend, Darrell Elliot of Pace; one son, Buster (Michael Hopkins) Brown of Jay; one step-son, Burl Brown Jr. of Jay; two brothers, Wayne Lucas of Rock Creek and Terry Lucas of Brewton; one sister, Becky Lucas of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one grandchild, Alex Graves; and one great-grandchild, Kayson Graves.

Funeral services were held Fri., Dec. 23, 2016, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Burial followed at the Elam Cemetery.

Visitation was held Dec. 23 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Terry Lucas, Little Terry Lucas, Mike Pharaoh, Randy Parker, Lance Harman and Robert Douglas.

Riley Ray Mullins

Mr. Riley Ray Mullins, 89, of Century, Fla., passed away on Wed., Dec. 21, 2016, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Mr. Mullins was born in McCullough and had been a resident of Century since 1959 coming from McCullough. He worked as a forester for 18 years and was with Alger Sullivan Lumber Company for 48 years.

Mr. Mullins was a member of First Baptist Church of Century and is preceded in death by his son, Donnie Ray Mullins Sr.; 10 siblings; and son-in-law, John William Collins.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Mary Lee Mullins of Century; daughters, Laura (William) Chancery of McDavid, Fla. and Charlotte Collins of

Flomaton; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Visitation was held Dec. 26 at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel until service time with Pastor William H. Chancery officiating.

Pallbearers were Tyler Walker, Ronny Walker, Issac Anderson, Derris Greggs, Aubrey Greggs and Charles Wicker.

Interment followed in Flomaton Cemetery.

Harvey Eugene Foster

Mr. Harvey Eugene Foster, 69, passed away on Fri., Dec. 23, 2016, in Fairhope.

Mr. Foster was a native and lifelong resident of Walnut Hill, Fla. He was retired from Masland Carpet with 38 years of service. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, outdoorsman and he was a member of the Dry Springs Community Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Minnie Lee Foster; and nephew, Rusty Foster.

He is survived by the mother of his son, Julia Foster of McCullough; one son, Ricky (Shelley) Foster of Walnut Hill; two brothers, Roy (Billie) Foster of Walnut Hill and Jerry (Betty Ann) Hastings of Walnut Hill; one sister, Louise Vance of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Leslee Foster and Kaylee Foster; two great-grandchildren, Clover Greenly Erin Shook and Brayden Mumaw; and a niece, Tracy “Coon Dog” Garrett.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Ray McCullough officiating.

Burial followed at the Dry Springs Cemetery.

Visitation was held Dec. 26, the same day as the funeral, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were John McCullough, Harvey Fowler, Leon Gibson, Jesse McCullough, Dewayne Hall and Hughlett Mumaw.

Audrey Evelyn Coker Thurman

Audrey Evelyn Coker Thurman, 92, passed away in her home in Onalaska, Texas, on Dec. 14, 2016. Born in Huxford, on April 10, 1924, she was the daughter of Edgar and Jesse Keller Coker.

Evelyn was a co-owner of a bakery and later the manager of P&M Superette in Pasadena, Texas, from which she retired.

After retirement, she moved to Monticello, Ark., with her husband Cecil Thurman, until his death in 2010. She then resided in Greer, S.C. with her daughter and later moved to Onalaska with her oldest son. Evelyn was a member of the Prairie Grove Baptist Church in Drew County, Ark.

Evelyn was predeceased by two sons, Charlie and Julian D. Pierce Jr.; a daughter, Toni Pierce; one brother, Elbert Coker; and one sister, Bobby Stallworth.

She is survived by her daughter, Donnis Burns; her son, David Pierce (Andrea); her daughters in law, Barbara Pierce (Roddy) and Cheryl Pierce; and one step-daughter, Beth Thurman.

She was the beloved grandmother of 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Millie Purvis, Peggy (JC) Moya and Faye (Mike) Morris; three brothers, George Coker, Jimmy (Susie) Coker and Billy Coker; and a host of friends and relatives.

Visitation was held Sat., Dec. 17 from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore.

Graveside services were held Dec. 17 at the Huxford Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Robert Heard officiating.

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

James Ezra Hall

James Ezra Hall, 70, passed away on Dec. 20, 2016, in Atmore.

He was a native of Atmore. He graduated from Escambia County High School, Snead State Junior College and Livingston University.

He was a member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Hall’s professions included work as a teacher, coach and farmer. He retired from the Alabama Department of Corrections.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Ervin Junior Hall and Loretha Johnson Hall.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Kathleen, of Atmore; sons, Johnathan (Monica) Hall of Jasper and Jeremy Hall, of Atmore; grandsons, Jake and Jase Hall of Jasper; brothers, Hilbert (Annette) Hall of Atmore and Myron Hall of Bessemer; sisters, Margaret (Dennis) Higdon of Columbus, Ga. and Diane (Kenneth) Snider of Rising Fawn, Ga.; and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held Dec. 23 from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel in Atmore with Brother Robert Heard officiating. Interment followed in Serenity Gardens Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Eric Hall, Scotty Hall, Mark Hall, Daniel Alaniz, Jimmy Woods and Mark Mack.

Visitation was held at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.
