  1. Amtrak visits Atmore – An Amtrak Inspection Train rolled through Atmore, which gave the locomotive a warm and resounding welcome. Those close to the situation are working to get the service back here.
  2. Riots at Holman – Two stabbings and riots at Holman prison, just outside Atmore, caused the facility to be on lockdown for five days in March.
  3. Brown Precision expands – Brown Precision Inc. of Huntsville, entered into an agreement to expand its company in Atmore.
  4. JDCC merges – JDCC, along with Alabama Southern and Faulkner State to consolidate to form Coastal Community College.
  5. Historic marker unveiled – An Alabama historic marker was erected at the Escambia County Training School, the first to be erected in Atmore.
  6. Top finish in Boston – Alan Ash finished in 39th place in the 2016 Boston Marathon in April. He clocked in at 2 hours, 31 minutes and 16 seconds.
  7. Drought hits area – Rain ceased to fall for almost three months, causing a city and statewide burn ban. Precipitation eventually fell in early December.
  8. ‘Klowns’ hit area – Several schools were placed on lockdown after a Flomaton woman, along with others, made a terrorist threat.
  9. United Bank is $40M lender – United Bank of Atmore was selected as a $40 million lender, the biggest in the United States.
  10. AFD battles yard fires – The Atmore Fire Department responded to 15 yard fires in a three-and-a-hour time span during the burn ban.
