Community to hold annual events for pastor

The Concerned Citizens of Atmore will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observance events starting on Sat., Jan. 14.

Each year, the CCA hosts these events to commemorate and celebrate the memory of King, who spoke out against racial discrimination during the Civil Rights Movement.

The annual Unity Prayer Breakfast will be held in Mason Auditorium at Atmore Community Hospital, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Cost of the breakfast is $12 per person, and tickets can be purchased from a CCA member or at the door.

Later on Saturday, the MLK Day of Service, from noon until 3 p.m., will commence at the Unity House on Main St. at 11:30 a.m.

The day of service is when a small group of young people assist with social activities at the Atmore Nursing Home. Another group will go to the Patterson Street Housing Development to clean up the grounds.

On MLK Day, Jan. 16, a parade and march will be held downtown Atmore.

The parade line up is at Houston Avery Park from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10 a.m. The parade route consists of driving from Houston Avery Park to Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., turning right on Carver Ave., then left onto Ashley St., then turn back onto MLK and end up back at the park.

The parade entry fee is $10 per unit. Funds from the fee will be used to serve the community’s needs.

Parade applications are available at the Unity House in the mailbox. All applications must be turned in by Jan. 14.
