Thirty-five years ago, in 1982, Greenlawn Hospital was holding an open house.
Kathy Reaves was selected to be Miss Atmore 1982. There were several photos in The Atmore Advance.
Pat Dye, former head football coach at Auburn University, was in Atmore to be the featured speaker at the Escambia County High School Sports Banquet. You football fans remember him I am sure.
The police department said that there had been no evidence of LSD on stickers in Atmore. The police chief said that they needed to pay close attention because of the real possibility of it being introduced into the schools.
There was a sale at Flomaton Wholesale. I remember that big old metal building just off the railroad tracks in Flomaton. When we remodeled our house almost forty years ago, I made many trips down to Flomaton Wholesale to pick up building supplies.
Mayfest was held in Atmore with all sorts of food, entertainment and fun for everyone. Mayor Patricia McKenzie was there even though she had to come on a broken foot. She had said that nothing was going to stop her from attending.
A.C. Moore Elementary School held a Field Day at the school. This is the time of year that most schools do schedule a field day to just get outside and have some fun.
The Pilot Club held a meeting at the Sweet Shop and watched a film, “The Gulf Coast.”
This one made me remember joining a club in high school. I was a charter member of the Anchor Club at Carroll High School in Ozark. It was the first time we had been asked and it was sort of cool being a charter member.
The City of Atmore was considering the purchase of a patrol dog for the police department.
Brewton Chief of Police, Glen Holt, announced that he was running for a seat in the state legislature vacated by Brooks Hines.
There were several articles over the past few weeks about the trouble England was having with the Falkland Islands. Argentina was the closest to the Falklands and thought it would be an easy matter to take the Falklands for themselves. It didn’t work, but England had to battle for it.
Martha Kirkland, Judge of Probate for Escambia County, was photographed receiving an “Orchid Award.”
It was announced that Jerry Clower was going to appear at the Blueberry Festival in Brewton coming up in June.
