Council approves cook-off

The Atmore City Council approved Escambia County High School’s request to hold a barbecue cook-off at Houston Avery Park later this month.

The cook-off will be held on Sat., July 29, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and will benefit the football team and band booster club.

ECHS head football coach Rico Jackson said Tuesday those interested in going to the cook-off need to purchase a wristband. Wristbands are $10 each, and are being sold at the gate.

In other business, the council:

• adopted resolution 2017-10 for the Employees’ Retirement System, to give a one-time bonus of $600 for retirees with 25 years of service, and those with less than 25 years to receive a $300 bonus;

• and approved the downtown merchants and the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce’s request to close West Ridgeley Street on Fri., July 28, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
