In the spring of 1983, it was announced that a new library was expected to be ready by 1984. A ground breaking ceremony was held at the site of the new library.
If you haven’t visited the Atmore Public Library, you should go and see just what is available there. Libraries are not what they used to be. In days gone by, it was a place to check out a book to read. These days, you can check out movies and audio books and still check out a regular book to read. And as a reader myself, I highly recommend it.
Atmore police arrested a local woman and charged her with murder after she was reported to have shot and killed another woman during an argument.
Tickets to a Ronnie Milsap concert in Mobile in April went on sale. The concert was held at Mobile Municipal Auditorium to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation.
A 17-year old teen was killed in a three car collision on U.S. 31.
County commissioners expressed their concern over the numerous amounts of junk that was dumped into rivers, creeks and streams. People were urged to put trash in the local landfill instead of just dumping things. I don’t know how much has changed over the years. I still see garbage where it shouldn’t be. How would you like it if stuff dropped off in your front yard?
County commissioners were also having to deal with things at the county jail which needed repair or getting rid of and replacing things in the jail.
The family history of the Betts family was published by its writer, Mary E. Brantley.
I love it when I see these things. It means someone else loves genealogy as I do. I hope to keep adding to my information and it never stops. I know much more about my family history than I did when the book was printed. I published my family history over 30 years ago. I didn’t have that many copies printed, because I never thought about those that might be interested in my family history. I figured that my family members would be the only one who wanted a copy. In the years following the printing I still have heard from libraries and people who wanted a copy, but they were all gone.
The Atmore Ambulance Service was to offer CPR classes. According to them, the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest or accident are very important and if the necessary steps are taken, a life can be saved. If more people learn how to do the life-saving procedure, more lives can be saved.
