Escambia Academy to bout with Tuscaloosa Ac.

Two top five AISA football teams are set to collide this Friday night as Escambia Academy takes on Tuscaloosa Academy in a regular season contest.

The Cougars are coming off of a 63-0 rout over Snook Christian, while TA is coming off of an open week. TA, like EA has done in the past, played in the SECIS Kickoff Classic at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery on Aug. 11. The Tuscaloosa team edged Copiah Academy (Mississippi) 14-13.

This was the first time EA hadn’t played in the kickoff classic in two years so it was a little different to kick off the year not in Montgomery, Cougars head football coach Hugh Fountain said.

In the win against Snook, Jabe Dawe accounted for two touchdowns, a pass to Tyrese Smith for 55 yards, and a 15-yard run. Pat McGhee and Wheat had a 30 and 25-yard punt returns for touchdowns, respectively.

Daughtry McGhee had a 15-yard TD run, and Patrick McGhee added a 18-yard scoring run.

Wheat and Daughtry McGhee had touchdown runs in the third quarter, and Christian Crook had a 5-yard touchdown run. Brady Howell had a quarterback sack and grabbed a safety.

EA had 289 yards of offense compared to Snook’s minus-47.

Fountain said Tuscaloosa is a top notch team.

“We saw them play in the preseason game at the Cramton Bowl,” he said. “They were in the semifinals last year in Class 3A.”

Fountain said the win against Snook gave a lot of players the ability to play.

“Our kicking looked better for us tonight,” he said. “We have a lot of things to do to get better.”

For the night, EA went 7-of-9 on extra points.

Fountain said a focus at practice this week will be toward execution.

“It looked like we executed well because we had fast plays,” he said. “That doesn’t mean much until you get a good look at the film.”

Kick off on Friday is at 7 p.m.
