W.S. Neal outscored Northview, Fla. 18-2 in the third period en route to claim its first win of the season in a 61-33 decision at home on Jan. 8.
The Eagles went on a 13-0 run in the first period, and allowed the Chiefs to cut the game to single digits by halftime at 28-20.
In the third period, WSN slowed the pace, set up its offense and made shots.
“I thought we came out and set the pace from the start,” WSN coach Dewan Salter said. “We played well on defense and got some shots to fall. I’m really proud of the boys, and the way they responded tonight.”
Joe Carroll got the scoring going for the Eagles with a 3 in the first period, and Ladarrius Harrison added a steal and an easy bucket for an early lead.
Later in the period, Carroll drained two free shots to take a 13-4 lead, and Amon Craig converted off a pass for a 15-4 lead.
WSN led 17-6 going into the second period.
Northview’s Seth Killam led the Chiefs in the second period, helping to cut the lead to 26-14 with good drives to the basket.
The third period was highlighted by three 3-pointers from Harrison. He led the Eagles with 19 points.
WSN led 46-22 after the third period.
“We had some turnovers there late in the second period,” Salter said. “We got four or five in a row before halftime. We had to come out strong in the third and establish the game, and keep moving and finish the game. That’s what we did.”
Isaac Bonam chipped in 13 points, and Carroll had nine for WSN.
In other action Tuesday, Escambia Academy fell 65-44 to Jay, Fla.
Tiquale Taylor led with 28 points; Bryant Quimby had 6 points; Ty’rese Smith had 6 points; and Jayson Helton had 7 rebounds.
Escambia County lost 64-58 to UMS-Wright to open Class 4A, Area 1 play.
