The Atmore Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. celebrated its 50th chapter anniversary during a celebration held at Wind Creek Casino and Hotel on March 30.

Polemarch (President) Vinson Bradley of the Atmore chapter welcomed those in attendance; and Dr. Ullysses McBride, 26th International Grand Polemarch, introduced guest speaker and 33rd International Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles Jr.

“You Atmore are the Kappas of my dreams,” Battles said, adding that the chapter is a grand example of a great organization.

Battles, who traveled to Atmore from Florida, said he knew he was in a special place when he crossed the state line.

“Dr. McBride, he’s been a legend of all of the Kappas,” he said. “We call him the favorite son of the south.”

Battles said it’s something that a local chapter can celebrate 50 years of service.

“We celebrate in the year of a jubilee in Atmore,” he said. “We’re celebrating 50 years of unselfish service.”

Battles charged those who were in attendance to think about what they’re doing to help the people they vowed to serve, adding that the local chapter did give scholarships, gave donations to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., donated to the African American Museum in Washington, D.C. and gave to the United Negro College Fund, to name a few.

“America is great because Atmore is on the map,” Battles said.

Prior to dinner, the members of the alumni chapter sang “Calling All Kappas,” a familiar black fraternity song.
